![]() THE WASA(1625) One of Swedens greatest Kings, King Gustav Adolfus II, in 1625 commissioned the building of the Wasa, named after his dynasty. The ship was designed and outfitted by a Dutch man, Henryk Hybertson de Groot, a trusted ship builder. By the time that the Wasa was complete Sweden was at war with Poland and the King insisted on another gun deck. The Wasa was launched in 1627 and a year later took on ballast and cannons weighing over 80 tons. A standard stability check on new ships was undertaken where thirty men running from port to starboard continuously. Unfortunately the rolling motion was so bad the tests were abandoned. The Wasa'a maiden voyage took place from Stockholm habour on August 10th 1628 and to show it's majesty fully all ports were open to show the 64 bronze cannons in all their glory. A freak gust of wind filled the sails and the Wasa listed violently, taking on water and sinking almost immediately.
